Moody Halloween Table Setting
I’ve been working on my black and white, moody halloween table setting and pulling out the silver platters and skeletons. Let me show you how I created this setting with six layers step by step:
Layer #1 {Placemat}
I know six layers sounds like a lot but really it’s not. Just follow along with me and you’ll see how easy and inexpensive this DIY table setting really is. The first layer is the place mat where I used torn out book pages and tucked them under the charger platter. I used a total of four pages since the platter is larger than a normal charger size. You could get away with using two pages if placing below a plate only. I created a similar look with book page placemats for my fall tablescape. You can read all about that here.
I don’t know what it is about book pages but I love incorporating them into my design schemes. Maybe its the black script on white or time worn pages. Since I was going for a black and white halloween tablescape this year, I found no need to buy placemats. Instead I tore out book pages! Free, easy, and fun!
Layer #2 {Charger plate}
Add a serving platter or charger if that is what you have on hand. The dollar store sells these silver plastic platters that make a big impact! I’ve used these for so many different occasions and have to say the best “dollar” I ever spent! By using the larger serving platter, I was able to add more stacking layers to my place setting.
Layer #3 {Patterned plate}
Can you tell how much I love black and white stripes this year! I found this plate at IKEA and can see it being used in many different themed table settings throughout the year. Since my table runner has stripes, I turned my plate so the stripes would run horizontal. The book page placemat and silver platter allow the stripe on stripe to be broken up as your eye lands on each layer from the table up. That’s a little trick I learned from my friend Eddie Ross when I was at the Better Homes and Gardens Stylemaker event recently in NYC. His new book Modern Mix is full of great tablescape ideas!
Layer #4 {Large plate}
Another Ikea simple white dinner plate tones down the stripe plate below but allows just enough of it to peak through around the edges. You can use any color of solid plate here. In keeping with my black and white theme, I chose a white plate.
Layer #5 {Halloween themed plate}
If this isn’t the cutest halloween plate I’ve ever seen, then I don’t know what is! My favorite store to shop locally is Homegoods and these were a recent find that I couldn’t wait to incorporate into my black and white halloween tablescape this year! I believe I paid $5 for a two-pack of these.
Layer #6 {Accessorize}
A creepy, glittery skeleton hand adds the final touch to my halloween place setting. Just as you would add jewelry to your outfit, your table setting should get dressed up too with a fun accessory. It’s like the cherry on top!
Stay tuned for the full reveal of my halloween tablescape coming up later this week!
